Gas prices in Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – You can get gas for under $2 a gallon just about everywhere in Albuquerque. So why would anyone pay almost$3 a gallon? That’s what one gas station is charging with a price that’s hovering around three dollars a gallon for months. It’s a price that the station owner says some people are willing to pay, but others are driving past.
It’s a given for most drivers that if you fill your gas tank at a station near the freeway, you’re probably going to pay a bit more. But for one station in the Huning Highland neighborhood east of downtown Albuquerque, its price is eye-catching.
“Oh yeah, what’s up with that dude?!” said a male driver coming off I-25 on Thursday.
“It’s a little too high, ” responded another driver at the I-25-Lead & Coal exit.
“Wow It’s a huge difference, ” exclaimed a woman filling her gas tank near Lomas and 10th on Thursday.
Drivers are responding to the price listed at the M&M Mart gas station on the corner of Coal and Locust Avenue, near the I-25 south onramp. For the last few months, that station’s price is $2.97 a gallon.
For 16 gallons of gas, that will cost drivers almost $50, about $16 more per for a fill-up than at most Albuquerque gas stations. Some drivers call it a surprise.
“Yeah actually it does (surprise me, ) out of Albuquerque, ” said one male driver at a stop light on Coal Avenue.
“I mean who gets to decide these prices?” asked another driver at the same stop light.
Turns out, the gas station’s owner does. So KRQE News 13 asked the owner about it on Thursday.
“You guys have been at $2.97 for a while, what allows you to keep that high?” asked KRQE News 13 reporter Chris McKee.
The owner didn’t want to go on camera, but he told us the station is getting ready to replace it’s pumps soon. That didn’t explain why the prices are so high, because the numbers aren’t stuck. However, the station owner did say the business will lower the prices when it gets the new pumps. The gas station owner said business has been slower, but says drivers are still stopping in.
Some people don’t buy it.
“Maybe 15 or 20 percent higher but a dollar higher, that’s kind of on the ridiculous side, ” said a former fuels driver who was shown a photo of the prices near 10th and Lomas on Thursday.
“Pricing like that it just doesn’t make any sense, you know he prices himself out of the market, ” said a driver filling up near Rio Grande and I-40.
